I can pack a chute in about 10 minutes. It varies from rig to rig, parachute to parachute and person to person. I think the pretty young girl you are talking about is Petra. She is our drop zone masseuse and Air Trash Cheer Leader...? :)

"I get the impression he's packed that chute more than once. :-)" He's had that main chute for about a year or so now. That is the only thing he didn't replace because it is a good main. Everything else is new including the helmet and jump suit. The Dolphin Rig is a very comfy rig and when I replace mine next year it will be the same. I'm really the one who talked him into getting it.? About half the price of most other containers and just as safe and more comfy than most.

"Vital Gear #2 A second chute." We all have two parachutes on? our back. THe reserve chute is on top. The main parachute is on the bottom. If the main parachute fails we cut it away and pull the reserve. If that doesn't work you put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye... :)

Hahaaa! That compressor was just waiting for you? to open your mouth. Interesting gadget, and I'm curious to see how it works. A great online tool and hardware source is Rockler Woodworking. My tool of the year is that DeWalt. I'm redoing the master B/R, moving a wall and putting up some drywall, and I've NEVER had a drill this powerful and this consistent. The thing amazes me every time I pick it up.

BLM is $5 a night now and thats just to keep the tweekers and other homeless from moving in and taking over. It's all still farm land out here. Sun City next door is full of retired people and? they go to the local hardware store in thier golf carts. Moreno Valley to the north has thier own. Murrieta to the south has thier's and Elsinore to the west has one. This town never got built.

I dunno what it is, but it must be your area. I was in Home Depot? yesterday, and you just about had to climb over people to get around. I took a back aisle to get from the wood section in the contractors area to the paint section at the far other end. Naturally, I always seem to need things that are at opposite ends of the place.

@Desertphile They fully expect the trailer to be able to be stored 24/7/365 out in the elements and I don't blame them one bit. I think the trailers should be able to withstand the elements.? But even then the life of the trailer was never expected to go beyond about 20 to 25 years much less 60. So with that in mind it's amazing that there are any left at all. Even this Shasta made it here all the way from 1957. That's 54 years. Not bad really.

@CapnDave33 I don't do complete rebuilds. I do restores. Ya gotta leave something for it to be a restored trailer. The center is the most complicated part to take down. That big cabinet is a major part of the structural support and integrity of the trailer. And removing it is a huge pain. The walls would have to be removed and completely rebuilt. It really would be a bunch of extra work. I also don't have a shop? atmosphere where I can remove and store the walls.

Congoleum is a brand name. They are part of the Mohawk flooring group now. The vinyl in my kitchen is Congoleum.? The G-10 plastic is a new one on me and the style Gold Seal is before my time too lol. I'll ask the boss he'll probably remember them.

Oy! I remember the brand name Congoleum. It was a "heavy duty" line back in the dark ages. And in those days, fyi, the good stuff was "vinyl asbestos" flooring. I don't recall any of us dying from it... Wasn't it just recently you said this one was gonna be a piece-o-cake? And now the ass end falls off and next step is to take? the top off? It never fails... I do agree that it's a miracle this trailer didn't disintegrate years ago. The deeper you get, the worse it gets. Yak!

@Desertphile Funny thing is, without being restored it would have been worth anywhere from $1000 to $1500 just because of the fact that it's an early Shasta. They are collectors items and the most popular trailers in the? industry. Go figure LOL... They are cute I must say. But its good to go through them like this and rebuild it so it lasts.

@goodtimefolkrock? Yep that can be a big problem. If you see any water damage at all it needs to be inspected much closer. And if it has been restored it's good to ask for photos of the restoral. If they don't have any I would walk if I'm not comfortable with it. Early into the "Trailer Tidbits" series on my website I explain ways to spot stuff like this. If you suspect rot stick an awl into a corner and see if it goes through. You can also find collectors in your area to inspect a trailer.

@DaddysXgothXragdoll Home Depot does not carry birch. You have to find a store like Ganahl Lumber. I went there today and bought 9 sheets. Nothing else will match if birch is what's already in there. No I used nothing on the roof. It is bare aluminum. Started the? paint at the upper seam above the windows. The fasteners are on inch twisted nails. I don't know the guage but I would guess about a number 6.

Hi Larry, I've enjoyed your vids. I visited Home Depot after watching. I couldn't find 1/8 Birch, Vapor barrier etc. a SKU would be great. Can 1/8 Mahogany panels be used in lieu of Birch? What gauge fasteners? were used, Brads and staples? 23GA too small, 18GA is better,16GA bigger still. Did you applied a roof coat to the Restored Deville? If so, I assume its better to apply on bare metal? Again, thanks for making that video series. BTW, HD has a Dewalt 18V Drill w/ 2 batts & charger for $99.

Now we must install blocks along the seam. This requires drilling some holes in the metal frame members in order to secure some of the blocks in place. Once they are installed we can move on to the fiberboard and the plywood sheathing.

@kb1nyd You really notice it when the trailer is up on it's leveling jacks. Then? there is no movement of the trailer itself on it's suspension, and you can really feel how solid or soft the floor is. This is a major improvement on the life of the trailer.

Earlier this year, I traded an old car that's been sitting in my yard for 4 years for a used 18-volt DeWalt cordless drill and an impact wrench, 3 batteries, charger and the big leather case to carry it all in. The drill is a 3/8th inch, but the impact wrench is a 1/2 inch. My neighbor wanted the old car to fix up for his daughter, and he'd been watching me use a 4-way lug wrench to raise and lower the scissor jacks on my camper. The? drill is great, but the impact wrench is fantastic. Merry Xmas

I have the same drill, It came in the 4 tool combination set, Saw, Drill, Sawsall and Light. Had it 3 years,,all are still going strong. And I use them at work almost every day. One? battery has died, the bad news is the damn battery cost 90 bucks. lol It will do the job.

Before we can get the new floor in, we have to finish getting the old floor out. I decided to replace the Celotex sub floor as well and while I'm at it I will be doing some other little chores that having the floor opened up helps me to accomplish like beefing up the framing.

Cute how they've quietly shaved 1/32 off of 3/8" plywood these days like it's no big deal. They're skimping materials to cut costs, and charging more. I ran into it buying the 3/4" plywood for the countertop. All? I could find was 23/32", and of course you're trying to figger, "Well? Is that close to 3/4 or what?" Turns out, if you get *cabinet grade*, it's still full thickness, and that's what I got for the counter. I've *never* seen my Home Depot as dead as yours was. It's always hopping.

@onlywhenprovoked The rotting was mainly in the front where it got the wet blast from the rear tires of the vehicle towing it. And then the other side of the same sheet was rotted from leakage that got in through the top vent. People leave them open and forget about them. Bad thing to do. I am going to make sure that the front is covered? this time. The rest of it was fine.

@anmoose I try to teach people different ways of making the trailer last longer. One of them is to install mud flaps on the tow vehicle. The rear tires of the tow vehicle is where almost all of the front end damage? to any bumper-pull trailer. Both water and debris gets thrown up and under the trailer. Windows are broken out and floors get rotten over time. Protect the front of the trailer as much as possible. Low and high. A rock guard on the window is good. Doubles as a shade when open

Well that floor was definitely rotted away to nuthin. I can't believe they only used 3/8" floors! Nobody bigger than a kid could walk on that without it giving. Jeez! But I guess it made it easy to tow... LOL Chicago makes good tools. I've been unimpressed with Dremel's modern lineup; way overpriced hanging on? their name, and just not built anymore. And I have a 45 year old MotoTool as proof of how they used to build them. That little bugger is a worker.

Still working towards getting the floor out we have to remove the main kitchen cabinet because it is over the plywood. But it also makes it easier to work in the trailer and on the cabinet when it's been removed.

Wow. I love the work you do About 10 months ago I was surfing on YouTube and came across your de ville series. I thought I could use a project. So the search was on. I found a 1955 rainbow 12ft. For $100 bucks delivered to my door. Funny enough it was still insured for the road and he towed it to my place. I got it in august and started taking it apart. @cheapswede Don't bother trying to cut nails or screws with your multi tool.... Just a waste of blades. They only cut SOFT metal. Like the skin.... Works great on that... Cut a perfect through? hole with one. The sawzall or reciprocating saw is key to any type of refurbishing...

@anmoose Ya like any tool, a? sawzall takes a little practice and use to get the swing of things. I've bent the heck outta the blades and cut around corners before. It's amazing what you can do with one. I want a cordless now. Worse than getting yanked outta your hand is holding on... That can hurt too. Specially if your elbo comes back into your ribs. HA! ouch...

Haha! They wanted to make sure that rail did NOT come off. Like ever... The Sawsall is one of the better tool investments I've made. I've done some pretty brutal things with it. When you wedge it into a spot like under that cabinet, though, you've got to watch that you don't? get the blade in a bind or it'll yank it right out of your hand. Done *that* cute trick a couple times...

@noozguy The walls on these trailers do not sit on top of the floor. In these trailers the walls are bolted to the sides of the floor framing. Only 3 bolts per side hold it all together. So the floor comes up and goes back down with? nothing in the way but the cabinets, and I removed the ones that were in the way.

The entire front third of the trailer needs to be rebuilt and there are soft spots in the floor. We start by removing the front exterior skin, the wooden framing and finally the interior paneling. Then we will tackle the floor.

@lonestar45 No reason you couldn't if you were to expose all the wood. That would require total disassembly of the trailer. But it's not necessary if you seal the outside up properly. Shasta didn't build? these things to withstand the elements. They were cheap production trailers that were built with flimsy materials and poor design quality. They were not designed to last 50 years by any means.

i have a question about resoration on campers. I know you said you use KILZ paint on the camper floors but why not use it on all the non exposed wood structure? Would it take just? too much time are the cost of the materal!

Yeah, she's getting to be quite an old lady, and she's been having some arthritis problems for a few years as it is. Seeing her crash down the stairs would scare me to death! She sure doesn't need to break something. Seeing her walking up and down it, you can tell that those joints are getting tired and stiff, and the right front looks a little gimpy. Might've been from one of those crashes. This oughta make things a LOT? easier for her, once she's used to it.

@mobiltec, Nice camera. The Carl Zeiss optics are a serious plus! It does 720p at a reasonable 6 MBPS, which shouldn't be too heavy on upload, BUT... upload time will? depend on the service you have and your upload speed. When I was on standard DSL and experimenting with HD, if they were too big I'd just set them up and let them go overnight. If all else fails, you could probably re-render the vids at 3 or 4 MBPS for upload, sacrifice some HD quality, but still get wide screen.

@mobiltec Ah, just had a quick Google of "insulite" - expanded polystyrene... That sort of thing is banned for use in domestic settings due to fire regulations. So anything similar is quite hard to come by. Expanded polyurethane boards are often used here (Kingspan). But it's rarely available in less than 1" thicknesses - Nightmare if the? headlining level is to be kept to a minimum.

In my research of insulation, there is a type known in the UK as "Aluflex" insulation. It's less than an inch thick but has insulation equivalent of 6". Looks and sounds good, but it isn't cheap. That may be my final option if my "cheaper" method doesn't work.

Nice looking trailer, but I can see it needs some work. After looking at the? back with that shelf thingy. I would install the same cupboards that are up front back there. Giving me more storage and it would look good I think. I am excited to see this one get done, and should be good with the new camera Larry, good luck and keep the vids coming!
