Hy I got a question :-) Where does? the 5V go to? an external battery or could you connect all the 5V leads from all your tranistors to 1 'wire' and connect this wire to a pin and put it HIGH? and whats the resistance of the resistor of the 5V lead? Thanks
By: ch3ch2och2ch3. on 10 May 12, 03:16:07
Hey friend, a question, what's code? of mosfet?? your project is very good

welcome to my world! don't give up!!?
By: mallemang. on 26 Apr 12, 17:28:18
I tried doing it with PNP (for cathodes) and NPN (for anodes) emitter followers thus eliminating the base resistors. It won't work simply because the base-collector junction is? forward biased for the transistors that are suppose to be off. Oh well...back to the drawing board.
By: kdarrah1234. on 24 Apr 12, 01:10:53
well, this scheme won't really work with RGBs, because you need to PWM the signals to those. I think I'm going? to experiment with some RGBs soon...
By: PsycoHenny. on 24 Apr 12, 00:38:56
Let's say I want to control a 10x10 matrix of RGB-LEDs. The LEDs have common cathodes. I put the 100 cathodes in the 10 rows so I'll need 10 pins for the cathodes. For the 300 anodes I'd have? to basically create a 3x10 submatrix which I could theoretically multiplex further to save 7 pins. So I'd need 40 pins in total. Are my assumptions correct?
By: kdarrah1234. on 23 Apr 12, 03:04:13
yes? its a 328, I'm using the arduino USB to serial converter
By: LCbrass. on 16 Apr 12, 14:28:27
Nice tutorial. Are you using the atmega328 chip? What's the board you've used to connect? it via USB?
By: rainbowsalads. on 02 Apr 12, 15:57:24
i just realised, regarding the pre multiplexers, one is? for cathode, the other anode triggering. so yep they have to be two separate smaller pre multiplexers not one larger pre multiplexer. : ) p.s i got the latch circuit working so can hold on leds with i short logic 1. : P

hi, i just tried a 3x3 grid controlled from max msp through arduino. it works fine to switch each light on, but to cycle through fast and try to create the illusion all leds are on at the same time: they seem to flicker allot. not sure if its how max sends its bangs through the serial? maybe not fast enough? I think i shall have to add some? latches on the end of my channels. Great tutorial by the way. thanks : )

ha, yea I? saw that video too, and yea, I've done that a few times... useful for capacitive touch inputs
By: rainbowsalads. on 30 Mar 12, 07:47:00
Hi : ) Have you thought to soft latch (electronically toggle)leds from a microcontroller? So all that is needed to keep an led on is a short logic 1, and then to turn it off again another short logic 1? could this be beneficial? reduce the? amount of data needed to be sent from the arduino, reduce flicker? here is a video about soft latching on the youtube channel eevblog " watch?v=Foc9R0dC2iI&list=FLOmsIEXFvQb5Thd7MBMcDDA&feature=mh_lolz " This could be modified to receive from an arduino: )

hmmm.... maybe? would be a? good experiment! let me know if you try it out
By: rainbowsalads. on 27 Mar 12, 20:08:13
hi when you multiplexed the initial 2 rows of 8pins(16) as 2x 2x4 = 2 x6 arduino pins(12) making a saving of 4 pins. Could you instead have multiplexed the required 2 x 8 (16) as one whole 4x4 = 7 pins, making a saving of? 9? so i mean instead 2x 2x4 , mutiplex 4x4 to get your 16 ?
By: keoni29. on 22 Mar 12, 18:57:35
I do have a shiftregister lying? around somewhere. I added a transistor to amplify the 5v coming from the arduino to 9v. The leds are somewhat brighter now. Multiplexers are much cheaper than shiftregisters I think. I got mine from old electronics.
By: kdarrah1234. on 22 Mar 12, 00:23:36
only 8? LEDs? you shouldn't have a problem with that, I don't know anything about the 4015, but you could use a shift register since its only 8 LEDs
By: keoni29. on 17 Mar 12, 23:36:33
I have 8 leds multiplexed and I can barely see them light up in daylight. The remaining code results in almost 10% duty. I'm using a 4015 multiplexer which is very handy when using both multiplexed input and output at the same time, but the leds just don't show? up. Do I have to increase the current or attach a buffer of some sort?
By: legoclockfreak710. on 15 Mar 12, 17:13:23
true enough... well do what you will... im gonna stick with my microcontrolers!!!?
By: caseyjholmes. on 15 Mar 12, 06:55:31
Check my channel for a video of 9 LED's multiplexed to 6 transistors on a ATMega 8. Now I should charlieplex those 6? transistors to three pins!
By: caseyjholmes. on 15 Mar 12, 06:52:34
I don't necessarily know that this would? be true. You would still need the same number of switching gates, correct? It might be less pieces, but would it really be all that much easier? Plus these simple transistors are available for $2 a pack of 10.
By: caseyjholmes. on 14 Mar 12, 18:54:37
I just posted a video response of this. You have to know how to make a "for loop". If you can loop things, you can create the effect? that all the LEDs are on at once in a certain pattern without them actually all being on at once. You do this by firing each LED for a short amount of time in one pattern in a loop, then go to the next loop for the next pattern. I posted a video response I'm not sure where it went.
By: caseyjholmes. on 07 Mar 12, 07:37:36
Thanks for explaining how to multiplex the multiplexing! haha I get it.? Now I'm going to make one!

qustion are u explaning on few floors of leds or only on one floor? and if u explan on one floor so i need to duble mypin umbers to add each floor above? for example i need to build 3x3x3 so 3x3 need 6 pins for the other floors i need more 2x6 pins? or is 6 pins for all? the 3x3x3?
