What is a Skydiving Wind Tunnel?
Skydiving is certainly a very exciting and memorable activity. If you want to get the experience without actually going thousands of feet in the air before jumping out of an airplane, you might want to visit a skydiving wind tunnel. A wind tunnel is a tube shaped structure where the effects of wind are studied. Of course, for the purposes of sky diving this tunnel is used to simulate the conditions experienced when you jump from thousands of feet in the air. You will feel like you are actually skydiving even though you are not.
One of the most famous indoor skydiving centers is Flyaway Indoor Skydiving. This is the first vertical wind tunnel crafted for this particular purpose in the United States. At a facility such as this, you get to experience the exhilaration of real skydiving. There are height and weight requirements, although most people will have no problems meeting them. For example, people who weigh more than 230 pounds or less than 40 pounds cannot use the tunnel for obvious reasons. As far as height is concerned, the jumpsuits provided accommodate most every height other than extremely short or extremely tall. In these cases a custom suit might be required.
The process is simple. First, you will attend a brief training class where you will learn the basics and be given your equipment. Equipment includes your jumpsuit, safety goggles and ear plugs to protect your hearing. Then you will be taken to the tunnel. After the wind is turned on, you will be elevated up to twelve feet by the powerful airflow. During this time, your instructor will be right with you to offer guidance and make sure your flight experience is safe and enjoyable.
If you've ever experienced traditional skydiving, you may find a skydiving wind tunnel a bit different. Some seasoned jumpers feel the tunnel is quite restrictive, but of course they are accustomed to the wide open sky. Wind tunnels are ideal for training purposes and are often used by competitive skydivers as well as those preparing for their very first jump. The conditions in the tunnel are very similar to actual skydiving conditions, therefore this is an effective way to train yourself. To find out if there is a tunnel near you, look in your local Yellow Pages or try an online search.
